Background
In 2015 an intergovernmental agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report that concluded that the main ingredient in the popular weed killer, Roundup® produced by the company Monsanto, was ruled as a Group 2A agent, “probably carcinogenic to humans.” The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), specifically linked exposure to the product to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and its various subtypes of cancer.
The IARC came to their conclusion after analyzing years of studies that assessed the impact that the herbicide had on farmers, forestry workers, and municipal weed-control workers in the United States, Canada, Finland, United Kingdom and Sweden. Their report conclusion was significant because it confirmed that the world’s highest-selling herbicide, Monsanto Roundup® is toxic to humans and those who are exposed run the risk of incurring serious health issues.

The multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation, Monsanto, is based in St. Louis, Missouri and incorporated in Delaware. It is the world’s leading producer of glyphosate. Monsanto began marketing their product, Roundup® in the mid-1970s after it discovered the herbicidal properties of glyphosate and was the sole manufacturer of the glyphosate-based herbicides until 2000 when its U.S. patent on glyphosate expired.
Despite the IARC’s assessment, Monsanto still maintains that glyphosate and its leading product, Roundup® is not a threat to the health of humans. Due to Monsanto’s continuous marketing of their product even in the face of conflicting evidence, they are potentially endangering the lives of many.
